Our Governors

    Steven Alton (Chair of Governors)

E: steven.alton@norbury.derbyshire.sch.uk

I have been a Governor at Norbury for over 10 years.  I have seen first-hand the positive impact that this small but highly focused school has on the life chances of all its children.  My own children flourished at Norbury and this has fully equipped them to take full advantage of all the opportunities that secondary education presents.  I am proud to support the whole teaching team at Norbury to continue their fantastic work.

   Catrin Rutland (Vice-Chair of Governors)

E: catrin.rutland@norbury.derbyshire.sch.uk

My name is Catrin Rutland and I am an associate professor of anatomy and developmental genetics at the University of Nottingham. Although my educational background is mostly with 17-70+ year olds, I believe the most important stages of learning start early. For many years I have been invited to visit schools and I have written several scientific papers for young people. My links to Norbury CE Primary School go back many years.

I have had the pleasure of coming in each year to talk about being a scientist and a science fiction writer, designing fun but educational days for the entire school and I love seeing the group short stories, anatomical pictures of dinosaurs and even the gummy bear DNA the children create. I started as a co-opted governor and was more recently selected as the vice chair. I greatly value my own education at a village school and then at a Church of England secondary school, and aim to support our children, parents and carers, and staff here at Norbury School.

  Sophie Chadfield

E: sophie.chadfield@norbury.derbyshire.sch.uk

I first joined the governing body, as a parent governor, in October 2018, when my daughter was in year 4. As a secondary school teacher, I happily placed myself with the Curriculum committee overseeing the intent, implementation and impact of all subject content which was being taught to all year groups. In 2021 I took on the role of safeguarding governor and EYFS governor as well as chairing the quality of education committee. I have ensured to carry out all training opportunities available to develop my understanding of how to both support and oversee all aspects of safeguarding at Norbury.

Working with Norbury school has been hugely rewarding, the children are at the heart of every decision made by the staff and the governors. My daughter started Norbury, at the age of 5, unwilling to speak to unfamiliar adults, she left with the confidence to audition for a part in her secondary school play. Being a governor at Norbury and being a part of a school that helps children fulfil their individual potential and grow into confident and happy people makes me feel incredibly lucky. My sons are now both at Norbury school and it is such a fantastic opportunity to be a part of the Norbury school community, both as a parent as well as a governor.

Norbury is an incredibly special place, a place like no other, where children thrive by being themselves and by feeling valued. Having this at the heart of the school makes being a governor here a huge privilege.

I first became involved in Norbury School after we moved to Norbury as a family from North Yorkshire in 2010. My eldest son started at school the year after. As a new family to the area,  I really appreciated the small school ethos that Norbury has, younger children were welcomed into the school by all year groups and there was a real sense of family. As my son had additional physical needs, that really helped both him and me with his transition to primary school.

Living locally, helping out at school became a regular part of my time. I have been involved in all sorts from prop making for school plays,  support on school trips, and helping with Norbury's Well Dressing. I also served on the committee for FONSA.

My youngest son started at Norbury six years ago, as my eldest son was making the transition to secondary school. it was around that time that I joined the governing board as a Parent Governor. I am halfway into my second term as a governor now and my responsibilities are Special Educational Needs (SEN). Being a governor is a great way to give back to the school and staffing team. I feel I am a small part helping to keep a unique primary like Norbury School going for many years to come.

 Anne Woods

It was a great privilege to be asked to join the Governing Body of Norbury School as a Foundation Governor. I am a parishioner and PCC member of St. Peter’s, Snelston, and have links with St. Mary & St. Barlok Church, Norbury. I have many years experience as a teacher, headteacher and governor and I hope to be able to bring the skills acquired from these roles to the FGB to benefit all areas of the future development of Norbury School and in my role as a Foundation Governor, to ensure the development and promotion of the School’s Christian foundation.

When I was a governor previously, one of the most enjoyable parts of the role was to get to know the children, staff and parents/carers by attending assemblies, church services, events and when carrying out the necessary monitoring visits required by a governor. On my visits to Norbury to date, I have seen that its countryside situation lends itself to a wonderful learning environment to develop the children both academically and spiritually and I will look forward to seeing the ‘Laughter and Learning’ at Norbury during my tenure as a governor.

I joined as a governor in 2021 and am Chair of Finance and Resources Committee and also have role for oversight of pupil premium and sports premium funding.

I believe that Norbury is a welcoming, enjoyable and fun place for children to thrive and learn and I hope to bring fresh new ideas to the school that will help maintain the extremely high standards already in place. I am also keen to ensure that the head teacher and all staff members feel fully supported so they can maintain their hard work and commitment to the school.  I enjoy the oversight of the school that being a governor provides, and I feel I can use my skills to contribute positively to the School.  I am particularly interested in optimising the use of our budget and seeking new ways to supplement it, and also to support the excellent sporting attainment we have seen develop in the School more recently.

I have worked in Higher Education for nearly 20 years, being part of a small team that set up the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, which now is rated as the best school of all universities for its student experience.   I am Head of Operations with responsibility for strategy, planning, innovation, finance and the student lifecycle; I also teach business and entrepreneurship.  It is interesting for me to see the difference in government funding between my Veterinary School  (c. £20k per student) and primary Schools (c. £7k per child), and how in both cases it's important that every penny counts to deliver excellent outcomes. Prior to joining Nottingham I was Head of Geology research for an oil company, having trained professionally as a geologist.

I have recently been appointed as a Parent Governor at Norbury.  My oldest daughter currently attends the school and my youngest will be starting in September.  Norbury has been a big part of my life as I attended the school myself, and we have plans to move back to the village shortly.  As a Governor I am enjoying learning more about the school, and supporting where I can.
